Although accessing the Internet is becoming cheaper, not everyone is willing to go through the box for it. Some try to access the neighbor’s WiFi. But stealing WiFi leaves a mark. Also, it is not as easy as it may sound. We tell you what your Movistar Router does to avoid it and how to change your WiFi password if someone discovers it.
And it is that one thing is that you lend your WiFi network to a visit temporarily, with the help of the WiFi for guests, for example, and another thing is that someone finds out your WiFi password and decides to use your bandwidth without permission.
The good news is that there are measures to prevent someone from stealing your WiFi. To begin with, your Movistar Router offers WiFi via password. And that password or key is complex enough to be easily detected. Specifically, 20 alphanumeric characters. And if the default password is not enough, you can change it yourself.
Detect WiFi thieves in your Movistar Router
There are several symptoms that give us a clue that there is a WiFi thief near us. Your connection may be slower than usual at certain times. But stealing WiFi is not something that goes unpunished. Leave a trace.
To get started. If you are a Movistar customer, using the Smart WiFi App you will know which devices have connected to your Movistar Router. And if you find an unknown device, there you have it. Don’t use Android? What is that connected Android phone doing? Don’t have an iPad at home? Why does it appear there? The application itself will notify you when a new device connects.
Once detected, you can pause the connection or block it directly from the application. By clicking on the Lock device, you will prevent it from reconnecting to steal your WiFi. To avoid blocking your devices, in the tab you will see the internal IP and the MAC address.
The Smart WiFi App is available on iPhone and Android. There is also a Living App version to use on your TV through your Movistar UHD Decoder.
From the Movistar Router configuration, it is also possible to see if devices are connected without permission. However, to avoid touching what we should not, with Smart WiFi we will solve the problem easily: we will detect connections and block them instantly.
Change your WiFi password
If someone has agreed to steal your WiFi, it means that they have found out what the password for the WiFi points is. If so, you will need to change those passwords. The advantage of having the Smart WiFi mobile application installed is that you can do it in just a few seconds and in a few steps.
To change the WiFi password, open the Smart WiFi mobile app and look at the bottom menu of the screen. There is an option called “My network”, click on it. You will find two different views, one called “Self-diagnosis” and another called “My WiFi”, which is the one that interests us. Once you log in, you will see the different home networks (WiFi and WiFi Plus) appear as well as the option to create a network for guests. By clicking on any of them, it will give you the option of both changing the name of the network (here, personalize it to taste) and also the option of adding a new password. As a recommendation, it should be between 8 and 31 characters, you can use numbers, letters, and special symbols to make it more complex.
Even if you have no indication that someone may be stealing your WiFi, it is advisable to update your password from time to time to strengthen security. If you don’t have the Smart WiFi app yet, download it and start enjoying more control of your home connectivity. And if you are a Fusion Customer, do not forget that if you access Movistar + through the UHD Decoder, you will be able to enjoy the Smart WiFi Living App that will allow you to manage your connection and optimize it from the television.
